Norfolk Break: Saturday

I did not think I would be able to update my blog whilst I was on my break in Norfolk, but thanks to an O2 Laptop dongle, I now have Internet connection!

We arrived in Colkirk, just outside Falkenham on Saturday. The cottage is great, very quiet location, with fields out the front.

My biggest wish this holiday was to get some good views of barn owls in the wild… something I have not seen. You can imagine how excited I was when the owner told me that they hunted in the field opposite and sometimes sat on the fence posts right outside the front window! It was looking promising.

We settled in and then drove down to the coast to Wells next the sea….. very busy, it being back holiday weekend, but we parked the car and had a stroll along, away from the throngs of bucket and spade clad tourists, into Holkham National Nature reserve. Only had time to walk for about an hour, but got some good views of a couple of goldcrests foraging in the pine trees.

The light was fading as we got back to the cottage, so we walked up to a stile into the field opposite the cottage. Straight away I saw something sitting on a fence post at the top end of the field, quite far away… our first sighting of a barn owl! It sat there long enough for us to get a good look with the binoculars then it was off…. a ghostly form disappearing into dusk.

A great start to the holiday!
