Why AlfrescoWild?

AlfrescoWild is a space I’ve created to share my love of wildlife and my passion for helping others, especially children, connect with the natural world.

After over 30 years in teaching, including a decade leading outdoor learning in a large West Midlands school, I’ve seen how powerful time spent outdoors can be for curiosity, confidence, and well-being. I believe that when children (and adults!) are given the chance to explore nature, they learn to love it and in turn, want to protect it.

Here, you’ll find a range of activities, ideas, and resources to inspire you to step outside, discover the wildlife around you, and enjoy the simple joy of being in nature. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, grandparent, or just someone who loves the outdoors, I hope AlfrescoWild gives you the spark to get outside and go wild!

This section will grow as I add and develop the resources here. If you do take on any of my ideas, please share them with me either by social media or email.

Wild Resources

Here you’ll find an ever-growing collection of resources to help bring the wonders of the natural world into learning, whatever your age. Some of these are my own creations; others are brilliant activities I’ve discovered online. I’m gathering them here so educators and curious minds can find inspiration in one place. I’ll keep adding more over time, so if you find something great, I’d love to hear about it!

WildlifeGran

Becoming a gran has been one of the most special chapters of my life. My mum, who adored children, sadly passed away while I was pregnant with my daughter. She never had the chance to meet my two wonderful children, or the other eight grandchildren my siblings and I went on to have. Not a day goes by when I don’t wish she could have experienced that joy.

Now, as a gran to two beautiful grandchildren, I feel incredibly privileged to share in their early adventures; moments my mum never got to have. Spending time with them feels like a gift, and it’s even more meaningful here at Gwyltt Hollow, surrounded by the natural world I love so much.

I want to pass on to them everything that nature has given me; curiosity, awe, wonder, and respect for all living things. I want them to explore, to get muddy, to listen, to look closely and to fall in love with the world around them. These young minds are our future, and they need nature now more than ever. If they can learn to love and cherish it, there’s hope that they’ll protect it for themselves and for the generations yet to come.

Alfresco Wild Projects

Find out more about the projects I have undertaken so far.......

This area will begin to build into a resource of ideas for activities and projects. Some were developed in lockdown, others will emerge as I spend time with my grandchildren and share some of the time we spend outside together.
