There is often a bit of a lull in my garden, in terms of wildlife, at the end of the summer and beginning of the Autumn. The garden never really looks its best, as I don’t like to cut everything down as soon as it finishes flowering, but would rather let things go to seed. This allows birds an extra food source and also means that plants that like the soil conditions will pop up all over the place in the garden in the Spring!
Bird feeding stations tend to dip in number of visitors as there is a lot of natural food around and certainly the berry and fruit crops this year have been pretty good.
In the last few weeks, things have been getting busier and even a few bonus wildlife sightings in my garden! Last week, I was working at home of my computer and I saw this fox appear in the garden at about 3pm. I rarely see them in daylight, let alone in the garden! You may remember some weeks ago now, I uploaded some clips of stunning juvenile green woodpecker visiting my waterhole. Well, he’s back and he is starting to moult into his spectacular adult plumage! He is losing his stripy appearance and becoming much greener. The red cheek patches, that show he is a male, are becoming clearer. The feeders are beginning to pick up and I finally have a combination on my hub feeders that seems to have stopped the squirrels, larger birds and the rats from accessing them. I have a single seed feeder on a pole further up the garden and it is good to see a few house sparrows appearing again. House sparrows are quite rare visitors in my garden and I always love to hear their chirps which remind me of my childhood growing up in SE London.
The snack bar has been quite quiet of late, but visitors are picking up again and the robin is a regular!
Finally, the Mammal Box had a change of scene for a few weeks, when the bathroom set got an airing! As always, the small mammals couldn’t help themselves and loved the food hidden in the bath, sink and the toilet of course!
