Spinning Squirrel Sunday!

Writer's picture: WildlifeKateWildlifeKate

With 5 squirrels frequenting my patch, we have a constant battle to see if I can outwit them and keep them off the feeder with expensive seed mixes in! Don’t get me wrong, all wildlife is welcome and I have 2 squirrel feeders out, with peanuts and sunflower seeds in… so it is not as if they have to dominate the feeders set out for the birds.

Whilst sorting out some old feeders, I cam across a device that I was given some 4 or 5 years ago! It is called a Squirrel ‘Tilt ‘n’ Spin’ Repeller.

Powered by batteries, the idea is that the weight of a squirrel triggers the unit and it then spins the feeder for 10 seconds, hopefully dislodging the offender! I don’t remember having much luck with it last time, but I bought some batteries and hung it out in front of my hub feeders. At first, the squirrels were climbing onto the feeder from an adjacent feeder and it would often not trigger. They needed to leap onto the feeder to trigger it. With a few adjustments to the set up, I ensured that they would need to leap onto the tray,,, and that was when the fun began!

NB: No squirrels were harmed in the making of this video… although there were a few damaged egos!!

Gave me a few giggles today!!!
