Sedum cafe

Writer's picture: WildlifeKateWildlifeKate

My Sedum spectabile (ice plant) is just coming into flower and is already proving a popular nectar cafe! In a little sunshine this afternoon, I watched for some time as a variety of species were taking advantage of the newly opening flowers. I had my Panasonic Lumix in my pocket and decided to do some shots with that rather than getting my DSLR. I set it on macro and on AV, with a fairly high shutter speed. The advantage of these tiny cameras is that you can hold them right up close to the subject… and I had the camera resting on the florets just cms from the insects.

The camera copes really well and when I uploaded them, I was really pleased. Being 14 mega-pixels gives you scope to crop in and these images are all cropped… some really heavily cropped to show some of the detail that this great little camera picks up.

These insects are truly amazing to look at … this is what is brilliant about macro photography; you are able to study and appreciate these insects in a way that is not possible with the naked eye.

The bees are common carder bee and honey bees (from the hives opposite the garden) and the hoverflies are mainly Helophilus pendulus.

Here are a couple of my favourite shots:
