I have kept hens for about 3 years now, a motley assortment of ex-battery hens and a selection that I have raised from eggs either here or at the school I teach at. When I was sent this product, I thought it looked like a great idea... an easy way for me to supplement my hens' diet and a great activity for kids too!
Wheatgrass is packed with vitmains and minerals and can help keep your hens healthy and even improve egg yield.
The packaging instructions were clear and easy to follow. They suggested growing the wheatgrass on the Feathers & Beaky Chicken Grit, but as I didn't have any, I decided to grow mine on kitchen towel, in the same way as I would grow cress.
I used a recycled takeaway dish to grow it in. I dampened the tissue and spread the seeds out on the base, so they were in a single layer and barely touching. I covered them with clingfilm.
Within a few days, they had germinated and I kept the tissue damp. The wheatgrass then grew at an amazing pace and was soon looking quite lush and green. The roots had grown right through the kitchen towel.
In just one week, my wheatgrass was ready for the hens. I was amazed at how quickly it grew. The roots, having grown through the kitchen towel, meant I was able to easily lift it and place it in the run for the hens to investigate... they loved it! It was all gone within 15 minutes of placing it in the run.
This video clip shows how popular the wheatgrass was!
The packet contains 1.5kg.... enough for plenty of wheatgrass snacks in containers of this size. It is so easy to have a series of these on the go, so that your hens have a continual supply of delicious, fresh greenery!
This Feathers & Beaky Wheatgrass is available in many pet stores and with online retailers. More details can be found on the Spike's World website by clicking on the link below.
As you can see, the wheatgrass was very well received and I will be growing it on a regular basis both at home and at school..... I have lots of ideas for some more 'KeATivE' projects with this product... so watch this space!
