I have been experimenting with my Bushnell trophy Cam HD to try to achieve a closer focal distance (the distance from lens to subject). The standard lens is set at about a 3m focus distance... too far away for bird work or small animal work. I aim to develop some affordable kit that will help users focus on small mammals and birds, thus greatly enhancing the usage of the trophy cam, particularly in a garden set-up.
My close-up kit should be available to buy in May 2012
This set of stills were achieved with the Bushnell set at just 46cm from the feeders. I used it to monitor the birds visiting a feeder trial I have set up. The quality of the shots is excellent. If the birds move too quickly, then there is a blur, but these images show how good a shot this HD Trophy Cam can achieve .....
This shot shows the quality when the image is cropped... nuthtaches are pretty flighty, but will visit the feeder quite happily with the Bushnell set up in front!
I am most interested in developing this technique for video capture. The HD resolution means that the clips obtained are of a broadcastable quality. I have been experimenting, developing and fine tuning the technique and have been delighted with the quality of the footage I have obtained.have also carried out a series of trails using this technique with video clips too. The quality of the footage is stunning, as you can see from these four clips.
Female Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding on the log feeder.
